Solution tree is a participatory tool that helps groups analyze a problem by identifying its causes and effects, then constructing concrete and viable solutions. It symbolizes a tree, where the roots represent causes, the trunk the central problem, and the branches the potential solutions.
Preparation
- Select a comfortable space (physical or virtual) where everyone can collaborate.
- Provide visual materials such as large paper, markers, or an interactive digital platform.
- Define a central problem that will be the focus of the activity.
Step-by-step instructions
- Introduce the problem: Present the central problem to the group and ensure everyone clearly understands it.
- Draw the tree:
- Draw the outline of a tree on a large sheet of paper or a whiteboard.
- Label the trunk with the central problem.
- Identify the roots (Causes):
- Ask the group: “What causes this problem?”
- Write the causes on the roots of the tree, establishing clear connections to the trunk.
- Analyze the effects:
- Ask: “What consequences does this problem create?”
- Write the effects on the branches of the tree.
- Build solutions (Fruits):
- Invite the group to reflect: “What actions can mitigate or resolve this problem?”
- Write the solutions on the branches as fruits that the group can achieve.
- Joint reflection:
- Discuss the solutions, prioritizing those that are the most viable, innovative, or impactful.
- Conclude with a concrete action plan or next steps.
